The Presbyterian Church of the Covenant

The Presbyterian Church of the Covenant is a 1919 Neoclassical Revival structure designed by Harry Barton, one of Greensboro's most notable architects of the period (two additional wings were built in 1937 and 1965). It's eligible for historic-preservation tax credits as a contributing structure in the College Hill Historic District (National Register and local). The church's membership can no longer support the 48,000 square-foot building, and it is looking for a buyer to sensitively redevelop the building for a new use, possibly as multi-family residential.

The church sits on a 1.7-acre lot and owns two smaller, non-contiguous lots across the street now used for parking -- 0.22 acre and 0.67 acre. Parking on the church property may be sufficient to allow the two lots to be redeveloped as well. The neighborhood association has been briefed on the church's plans and supports the creation of market-rate multi-family housing on the property.

The Church of the Covenant is a cornerstone of one of Greensboro's most historic neighborhoods. The church is committed to finding a redevelopment partner who can give the building a sustainable future. The Development Fund is working with the church to find a developer that has expertise with historic properties and a commitment to preserving them through creative re-use. We would be very happy to talk with you about the Church of the Covenant, provide further information and answer your questions.
